John McCabe 84
I was sorry to hear today that author John McCabe passed away on September 27 in Petoskey, Michigan. He was 84.
McCabe was the ultimate authority of the legendary comedy team Laurel and Hardy. I have fond memories of his fantastic book "Mr. Laurel and Mr. Hardy" published in 1961. In 1964, he proposed the idea of establishing a group of fans to celebrate the careers of Laurel and Hardy. Stan Laurel loved the idea and gave his blessing and some input to McCabe. Early in 1965, The Sons Of The Desert was founded in the old Lambs Club in New York City. It blossomed to over 200 chapters throughout the country and continues to this day.
McCabe was the author of many books including biographies of Charlie Chaplin, James Cagney and individual books on Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy.
